A Brief History of Travel Trailers

Travel trailers evolved out of the early, non-enclosed observation trailers of the early days of automobiles. These non-enclosed trailers had few if any, amenities: no bathrooms or kitchens. They were basically a roofed place to sit and rest by the side of the road. These, in their turn, stemmed from horse-drawn coaches, which often were more comfortable and luxurious because they were driven at slower speeds and not for very long distances.

An offshoot of these were the caravans used by itinerant groups throughout Europe, which were often elaborately decorated and well-upholstered inside, although obviously without running water or electricity. Life in these predecessors of the modern travel trailer was simple and somewhat rough, with occupants not well-insulated from the elements and forced to fend for themselves, using natural water sources and cooking over campfires.

Over the years, RV companies improved upon their travel trailer design. More features were added, a variety of layout options were created, and many different models hit the market.

Modern travel trailers are insulated, comfortable, and filled with desirable appliances and amenities that make camping a fun and cozy experience. The interiors of today’s travel trailers are often comparable to residential homes, just on a smaller and more compact scale.

Versatility

Travel trailers allow you the ability to make use of your towing vehicle whenever you want it without the hassle of taking your entire home-away-from-home with you to every place you want to visit. You’ll be able to quickly unhitch your travel trailer, lock it up and leave it at camp, then hop in your car and go to the beach, deep into the woods, further up the mountain, or to any number of tourist attractions nearby. Your trip will be all the more fun without the hassle of trying to figure out where you’d park a full-size RV!
